Artajona
We were given a tour around Artajona by Town Hall employees Soco and Daniel, who generously showed us the imposing outline from inside, outside and in all kinds of light. The night-time floodlighting is especially impressive.
We were also introduced to some of the local people who participated in the making of the film, such as Jerusalen Jurio, who aged 82 at the time, explained to us how she had been one of ‘Nottingham’s’ market vendors, dexterously peeling the skin from a rabbit as though she were taking off a glove.
The main defensive building work took place between 1085 and 1109, commissioned by the monks of Saint Sernin, Toulouse.
More than a castle, it is a fortified town, with nine of the original fourteen towers remaining.
At the centre, the 13th century church of San Saturnine stands on Roman foundations.
