In 1485 it was captured during the Reconquest, and would later be a frequent target of the legendary pirate Barbarossa, leading King Carlos I to build the moat.

During the War of Independence, Polish troops defended the castle successfully against and Anglo-Spanish attack. General Ballesteros would retake it in April 1812 for the Allies.

From 1969, the last private owner, Leopoldo Werne de Bolin, started a process of reforms, and it is now a municipal property where cultural events are held.

It is situated at the southern end of the town, just across and at the mouth of the river.
