Durante la Guerra de la Independencia, las tropas polacas defendieron con \u00e9xito el castillo contra un ataque anglo espa\u00f1ol. El general Ballesteros lo retomar\u00eda en abril de 1812 para los aliados.
A partir de 1969, el \u00faltimo propietario privado, Leopoldo Werne de Bolin, inici\u00f3 un proceso de reformas, y ahora es un bien municipal donde se celebran eventos culturales.
Est\u00e1 situado en el extremo sur de la ciudad, justo al otro lado y en la desembocadura del r\u00edo.
